Football: Randall ousts Falcons, 10-6

12:56 AM CST on Saturday, November 13, 2010

By Greg Bogomol / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

SWEETWATER — Special teams play has been something Lake Dallas has taken advantage of all season, but on Friday it was special teams that ultimately cost the Falcons in a 10-6 Class 4A Region I bi-district loss to Canyon Randall at the Mustang Bowl.

The Falcons muffed two punts and punted one ball just 6 yards, leading to all 10 Randall points.

“Special teams just cost us. We shot ourselves in the foot all night long,” Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young said. “That’s our fault as coaches, not having the kids ready and prepared. You can’t make those types of mistakes in these types of games.”

Despite the miscues, the Falcons (5-6) still had a shot to win the game. They moved the ball down to the Raider 6-yard line and faced a first-and-goal. A run for no gain was followed by a pass that was intercepted by Bret Scheve to seal the outcome.

“We expected a good defensive game and knew they were solid on defense,” Randall coach Bryan Wood said. “We seem to always bend but don’t break, and we got the stop when we needed to. That’s been our story all year.”

Randall (9-2) advances to the area round where it will meet the Clint Horizon-El Paso Bowie winner next Friday night in Seminole. It marks the first time since 2005 that Randall has advanced past the first round of the playoffs. Last year the Raiders were just 1-9 in Wood’s first season.

The Falcons’ only score of the game came when they went to their hurry-up offense and produced their best drive of the night. Tyler Waller scored on a 12-yard run to cap a five-play, 55-yard drive that took only 59 seconds off the clock. A missed extra point proved costly, as it kept the Falcons from attempting a game-tying field goal in the last 30 seconds.

“We just forced that pass in there at the end of the game when we didn’t need to,” Young said. “We had plenty of time and a timeout, but we just didn’t execute.”

Randall, which had just 158 yards of offense, took advantage of the Falcons’ mistakes all night. Lake Dallas fumbled a punt in the third quarter at its own 46-yard line. Hunter Alford’s 7-yard touchdown run then capped a 13-play drive that saw Randall convert twice on fourth down.

Alford completed five of 10 passes for 50 yards and rushed for 28 yards on 15 carries. Gage Moore led the Raider rushing attack with 60 yards on 18 carries.

Lake Dallas, which finished with 277 total yards, got 134 yards on the ground from quarterback Dalyn Williams. He also threw for 110 yards, completing nine passes.

The only points of the first half came after a Lake Dallas miscue. After being pinned deep in its territory on a punt and unable to move the ball, Lake Dallas was forced to punt from its end zone. A shanked punt that went just 6 yards set Randall up at the 9-yard line.

Unable to get the ball into the end zone, the Raiders had to settle for a 31-yard field goal from Tre’ Norton. They held that lead at halftime despite gaining just 54 yards in the first half. Lake Dallas moved the ball for 131 yards but hurt itself with dropped passes, a fumble and the bad punt.

“You have to give them [Randall] credit,” Young said. “They did a lot of good things, but I still think we’re the better team. We just didn’t show it tonight.”

Football: Lake Dallas pulls away from Little Elm

01:34 AM CDT on Saturday, October 30, 2010

By Matthew Postins / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

LITTLE ELM — For anyone taken aback by Lake Dallas’ reliance on the running game Friday night, rest assured it was part of the plan.

Well, actually it became part of the plan after the Lobos turned the Falcons’ offense inside-out on its first two drives of the game — a contest that ended with the Falcons winning 36-15 to conclude their regular season.

The victory was significant for the Falcons (5-5, 4-2), as it pulled them to .500 for the first time this season. It also solidified the Falcons’ playoff positioning, as they are now a No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Division II playoffs, which start in two weeks.

Lake Dallas could play Canyon, Canyon Randall or Hereford in the first round.

Falcons head coach Michael Young had bigger concerns after the Falcons’ first two drives, which ended in punts. He and his staff expected the Lobos (5-4, 2-3) to blitz, and that tactic was mighty effective. The Falcons committed two penalties for 20 yards and posted minus-22 yards of net offense.

At that point, Young and his staff committed to the running game.

“It was really more of an adjustment than a game plan,” Young said. “We saw how effective their blitz was, and we determined that we were going to have to run the ball more.”

And the Falcons did just that, gaining 275 yards on 54 carries, an average of 5.1 yards per run. They threw just nine times.

The biggest beneficiary was quarterback Dalyn Williams, who gained 124 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground. But Tyler Waller (76 yards and two touchdowns) and Tre Dickerson (66 yards and one touchdown) contributed heavily.

Still, it took the Falcons well into the fourth quarter to get control of the football game, thanks to three turnovers.

Little Elm led 15-14 after Lobos quarterback Devonte’ Pullum used a naked bootleg to score from 11 yards out with 1:03 left in the third quarter.

Pullum led the Lobos with 78 yards rushing. Keaun Kinner added 71 yards, most of which were used to set up Pullum’s touchdown.

The Falcons took the next drive and regained the lead, capping off a nine-play drive with a 17-yard touchdown run by Waller with 9:46 to play in the fourth quarter.

Up 22-15, Falcon kicker Brandon Womack kicked the same squib-type kickoff up the gut of the Little Elm return team that he had on previous kickoffs. But this time it went awry for the Lobos. Both Little Elm returners in the area of the ball failed to commit to picking up the ball. That indecision led DJ Haynes to fumble the return, which Lake Dallas’ Daltyn Marchuk recovered at the Lobo 29.

Two plays later, Williams marched in from 11 yards for the score that ultimately put the game on ice, putting the Falcons up 29-15 with 9:21 remaining. Dickerson added a touchdown run in the final two minutes.

“I felt like we probably could have taken control of that game sooner had we not made those turnovers,” Young said. “We were able to force three turnovers and we scored two of our touchdowns off of those turnovers. But when we get to the playoffs we have to hang onto the ball.”

Lake Dallas turnovers led to both Little Elm scores. Dillon Bocanegra picked off a Williams pass in the second quarter, setting up a drive that led to Pullum’s 1-yard touchdown run. Pullum’s other score was set up by a Williams fumble, recovered by Little Elm’s Tony Booth.

The Falcons will have two weeks to prepare for the playoffs, a quirk brought on by the odd number of teams in the district.

“I admit that we weren’t real happy to have that bye at the end of the year when we saw the schedule,” Young said. “But now I think it’s coming at a good time. There are times during a season when you need to work on yourself as a team and not worry about an opponent, and we’re going to get a chance to do that now.”

CORINTH — Their record doesn’t show it, but the Lake Dallas Falcons appear to be peaking at the right time.

The proof may have come in the Falcons’ 51-21 victory over Wichita Falls on Friday night, a victory that most likely propelled the Falcons to their ninth straight playoff berth.

Lake Dallas (4-5, 3-2) head coach Michael Young would not come out and say for sure that his Falcons were playoff-bound. But, based on the fact that the Falcons own tiebreakers over the three teams they’re looking down at in the district standings — Wichita Falls, Denton and The Colony — there’s a great chance the Falcons will be playing football after their bye week on Nov. 5.

“We honestly didn’t put a lot of thought into it, because we have some football left to play,” Young said. “We have a big game next week against Little Elm, and we’re more focused on that.”

That game with the Lobos could be for a No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Division II playoffs.

The win was the Falcons’ third straight, as the team appears to be gathering steam as the regular season comes to a close.

“We’re playing real well on offense right now,” Young said. “Things have really been coming together on that side of the football. We’re scoring a lot of points and moving the football well.”

The Falcons started the season 1-5, searching for some equilibrium after losing several key players from last year’s district co-championship team, including quarterback James Franklin, who is now at Missouri. The Falcons’ last two losses came in their first two district games — against Ryan and Wichita Falls Rider, the two teams the Falcons are chasing in the standings.

The Falcons put up plenty of solid offensive numbers, starting with quarterback Dalyn Williams, who was 5-of-8 for 125 yards passing and three touchdowns, along with 30 yards rushing on six carries, two of which went for scores. Williams ended up sitting for most of the second half after the Falcons built a 48-15 lead.

Dontonio Jordan rushed for 83 yards and two scores, while Tyler Waller gained 123 yards and scored once.

The Falcons’ defense, meanwhile, gave up yardage but never broke down enough for the Coyotes to cut into their lead. The Falcons forced two turnovers and stopped two drives on downs.

“I know we gave up a lot of yardage tonight defensively, but I thought the unit as a whole played well,” Young said. “We only let them in the end zone three times.”

The Coyotes (2-6, 1-3) racked up yardage as quarterback Dylan Sheffield threw for 299 yards and wide receiver Diondre Singleton caught a game-high 15 passes for 197 yards.

Wichita Falls’ problems came down to two things. First, the Coyotes, while able to move the football up and down the field, were unable to score consistently.

Two of their first three drives were cut short by Sheffield interceptions. Lake Dallas safety Daveon Parrish stole one in the end zone on the Coyotes’ opening drive, and Ferrando Joseph wrestled the ball away in midair from a Coyote receiver on their third drive. Those turnovers were sandwiched around Sheffield’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Singleton.

The Coyotes had two other drives end on downs, while another ended with a punt. Only a late drive, which ended with D’Ahshujuan Dickerson’s 1-yard score, kept the Coyotes from ending the first half in single digits.

The other problem was on defense. The Falcons scored on the Coyotes at will on their first four drives of the game. The Falcons executed well, but the Coyotes helped them out with bad tackling and overpursuit of ball carriers. Falcons quarterback Dalyn Williams took advantage of that on several runs, cutting back against tacklers. Those moves helped him score two first-half touchdowns.

Williams connected with Dontonio Jordan for a 48-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game, and the Falcons never looked back. They built a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, and a 41-15 lead at halftime. The only thing that went wrong was Brandon Womack’s missed extra point on the opening score. But his five PATs made up for it.

The Falcons’ signature score of the first half was Jordan’s 49-yard touchdown run with 6:11 to play in the second quarter. Jordan took the snap out of the wildcat formation, found an opening between his left guard and left tackle and squeezed up the seam, accelerating past several would-be tacklers before finding daylight at the Coyote 25. From there, no one was going to catch Jordan, as he scored for the second time.

Football: Falcons pull away from Denton after halftime

02:02 AM CDT on Saturday, October 16, 2010

By Greg Bogomol / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

For the first 24 minutes, Lake Dallas and Denton stood toe-to-toe.

For the next 24 minutes, Lake Dallas dominated both sides of the ball as the Falcons knocked off the Broncos 38-12 on Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.

Leading just 10-6 at the half, the Falcons (3-5, 2-2) held Denton (3-4, 1-3) to four straight three-and-out series, while scoring on their first four possessions after halftime to open a 38-6 lead.

“They [Denton] played well in the first half,” Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young said. “They had a good design early and took advantage of a couple things they saw. The second half we made some adjustments and got some better play on the line.”

Dalyn Williams led Lake Dallas, rushing for 126 yards and throwing for 132 more. He consistently escaped one Denton tackle after another to gain first downs. As a team, the Falcons amassed 416 yards, while Denton was held to just 191 yards.

“They were able to run the ball some in the first half and they continued to do that in the second half and just wore us down,” said Denton head coach Randy Patzkowski. “They were just a lot more physical than we were on both sides of the ball, but there is still a lot of football left to be played.”

The Falcons’ first four possessions of the second half started at their own 37-yard line, 46-yard line, at midfield and at the Denton 26-yard line. Those four drives all resulted in touchdowns as Williams scored from 3 yards out followed by a 4-yard run from Dontonio Jordan. Tyler Waller added an 8-yarder before Jordan hauled in a 9-yard pass from Williams.

Denton’s two scores both came from Denzell King. He scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter, and his 7-yard scoring run in the second quarter got the Broncos within 10-6.

“Denton’s a good team and have been playing well,” Young said. “It’s important that we get going and play well after struggling early. We want to play really well our last few games.”

Lake Dallas controlled the ball for all but 39 seconds of the first quarter and for just under eight minutes of the third quarter. The only quarter Denton controlled was the second, when it used seven minutes and 30 seconds to get King’s touchdown run.

The Falcons used 6:49 on the game’s opening drive, getting a 2-yard run from Jordan to finish off a 16-play drive that included 14 running plays.

Brandon Womack added a 27-yard field goal to make it 10-0 on the first play of the second quarter after Denton stopped Lake Dallas following a first-and-goal at the 4-yard line.

Denton’s 15-play second-quarter scoring drive was aided by two 15-yard penalties against Lake Dallas. Denton was also whistled for three penalties on the drive.

Lake Dallas marched down to the 18-yard line with just over two minutes to play in the half, but Denton’s defense tightened once again and forced a 37-yard field goal try that was wide. The Broncos ran out the clock by going for a fake punt at their own 27-yard line.Anchor

Football: Falcons come alive to beat The Colony

01:37 AM CDT on Saturday, October 9, 2010

By Matthew Postins / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

CORINTH — Lake Dallas couldn’t wait much longer to make a move in the District 4-4A playoff race.

So the Falcons spent all of Friday’s 48-14 win over The Colony making a statement: that they’re not finished yet.

“The kids knew the stakes were high, and they really responded tonight,” Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young said. “When you’re 1-5, it’s hard to get up emotionally sometimes. I’ll give these kids and coaches credit. They had a great attitude all week, and that attitude and preparation really showed up on the field tonight.”

The Falcons have struggled for most of the season in finding an offensive rhythm. There was no such problem against the Cougars, as the Falcons had a 31-0 lead at halftime and seemed, at times, to have little resistance as they drove the football.

The victory was vital if the Falcons (2-5, 1-2) are going to contend for one of the district’s four playoff spots. Having already lost two district games, the Falcons couldn’t afford to lose a third, especially to the Cougars (5-2, 1-2), who could have grabbed an all-important tiebreaker with a victory.

Instead, if the Falcons and Cougars end up tied for a playoff berth, the Falcons get the leg up.

“We played really well tonight on offense, on defense and on special teams,” Young said. “Turnovers really gave us a lift. We needed a game like this to help give us some momentum going forward. We still think we’re a playoff team.”

The Falcons next face the surprising Denton Broncos, who handed Little Elm a loss on Friday. Next week’s game now has meaning because the Falcons put it all together against the Cougars.

The Lake Dallas offense applied pressure from the start and never let up, beginning with a score on its opening drive — a 9-yard touchdown run by Tre Dickerson in the first quarter. By halftime the Falcons were up 31-0, with quarterback Dalyn Williams driving the engine.

Williams finished the game with 173 yards passing and a scoring strike, along with 43 yards rushing and a touchdown. It was one of Williams’ best all-around performances of the year.

In the second half, running back Dontonio Jordan took over, scoring two touchdowns and finishing the game with 127 yards rushing.

The Falcon defense held The Colony to just 232 total yards, much of it coming in the second half. The Falcons knocked out Cougar quarterback Garrett Simpson in the second quarter, as he suffered an apparent knee injury. Backup Troy Chandler took over, but he and the Cougar offense could do little until the Falcons put their subs on the field in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons forced three turnovers, with special teams contributing twice.

Lake Dallas was already up 10-0 when Brandon Womack set up for a pooch kick with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. The kick sailed toward the Cougar 20 as a Colony returner watched a ball he thought was going out of bounds. Instead, it stopped dead and inbounds for the Falcons’ Tim Drozd to recover at the Cougar 22. The turnover led to a missed field goal by Womack.

In the third quarter, after the Falcons scored a touchdown to go up 38-0, the Cougars fumbled away a pitch during the runback and the Falcons recovered. That turnover turned into a Womack field goal, his second of the night.

The defense corralled the third turnover. On the first play after the missed field goal, Simpson threw toward wide receiver Caleb Appiah-osei on a slant route. But the pass bounced off his shoulder pad and Lake Dallas’ Daltyn Marchuk picked off the ball for an interception. That led to Tyler Waller’s 13-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

That score made it 17-0 Lake Dallas, and there was no stopping the Falcons after that.

Football: WF Rider holds off Falcons

01:35 AM CDT on Saturday, October 2, 2010

By Marshall Moore / Staff Writer

WICHITA FALLS — For the most part, Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young liked what he saw Friday night.

He saw his team’s offensive line improving, his star quarterback making big plays and his defense creating crucial turnovers. All of those areas had been problematic for the Falcons this season, and all of them seemed to be greatly improved against Wichita Falls Rider.

The one thing he didn’t see improvement in? The final score.

Despite outgaining its opponent and having a breakout game on offense, Lake Dallas still couldn’t pull out its first District 4-4A win, and suffered a 23-15 loss to Rider at Memorial Stadium.

The Falcons (1-5, 0-2), who shared a district title with Ryan and Guyer last season, now find themselves in a two-game hole to start district play.

“I thought our effort was great,” Young said. “We moved the ball really well, and we were excited about that. I’m happy with some of the things we did on offense tonight. Obviously, though, it would have been nice to get the win at the same time.”

Nice, and much less stressful.

The Falcons are on the outside looking in on the 4-4A playoff picture, with losses to district leaders Ryan and Rider. With just four games remaining, Lake Dallas can’t afford many more slip-ups if it hopes to stay in the race for the postseason.

Rider (3-3, 2-0), meanwhile, is in the thick of things.

After beating Little Elm 35-14 last week, the Raiders are looking to be firmly in position to nab one of the district’s four playoffs spots.

They jumped on Lake Dallas quickly, driving down the field in less than three minutes to open the game and scoring on a 16-yard run by Deron Royster, followed by a successful two-point conversion.

Lake Dallas fired back on its next drive, using 64 yards passing by quarterback Dayln Williams to march to the Raider 4-yard line. Tre Dickerson then managed to punch it into the end zone after breaking a tackle at the line of scrimmage.

Things started to settle down after that, but Rider did manage to extend its lead before halftime on another touchdown run by Royster, from 6 yards out, followed by another conversion.

The Falcons struggled to pin down Rider’s single-wing rushing attack, which ran up a total of 257 yards on 39 carries including 189 yards and three scores by Royster.

Those struggles were exacerbated by the loss of safety Ferrando Joseph, who went down on the second play of the game with an apparent ankle injury and was out the rest of the night.

“He’s one of the better defensive players in the district, I think, and definitely one of ours,” Young said. “Losing him really hurt us.”

Royster, meanwhile, who ran for 180 yards and four touchdowns last week against the Lobos, has 369 yards and seven touchdowns in his last two games.

“They’re just good at what they do,” Young said. “[Royster] is a good runner. He broke a lot of tackles on us tonight, and that’s really what hurt us.”

On offense, meanwhile, Lake Dallas seemed to have a breakout night behind the play of Williams, who rushed for 113 yards on 16 carries while passing for 145 yards and a touchdown. Williams had much better protection from his offensive line compared with last week against Ryan, and he made a variety of plays with his feet.

The only problem? The Falcons weren’t scoring points.

Lake Dallas left at least 13 points on the field for a variety of reasons, be it missed field goals due to lost field position from penalties or a fourth-down incompletion in the red zone early in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons had six penalties for 70 yards on the night and turned it over twice on interceptions.

That included one at the end of the game when, after the Falcons got one last chance following a fumble recovery by the defense with less than two minutes remaining, Williams was picked off by Rider defensive back Esse Gutierrez.

“It’s funny how that works,” Young said. “It just seems like some nights that happens, and I credit them — they made the plays. I thought we had a couple of good ones down there, especially on the fourth-down play. They made the plays, though, and we didn’t.”

CORINTH — If Lake Dallas has been a thorn in Ryan’s side over the past couple of years, consider them officially removed.

After losing to the Falcons in back-to-back games over the past two years, the Raiders used another solid defensive performance and big games from Kaylon Alexander and Michael Cudd to clip Lake Dallas 33-13 at Falcon Field in their District 4-4A opener.

“It’s the best feeling,” Alexander said of the win. “I think this was one of our biggest wins of the season. It was the first game of district, and we had a lot of motivation going into this one. It feels good.”

It should, especially considering the series’ history.

For all of the success Ryan (5-0, 1-0) has had over the past two years, Lake Dallas (1-4, 0-1) had proven a hurdle that it just couldn’t clear. The Falcons beat the Raiders 35-31 last season and won in a 42-38 offensive shootout in 2008.

This year, though, Ryan would have none of that.

The Raiders jumped out to a quick lead after an 85-yard return by O.T. Walker on the opening kickoff set up a quick two-play scoring drive that was capped off by an 8-yard run by Alexander just 52 seconds into the game.

The Raiders extended that lead with a 17-point second quarter after a 25-yard field goal by Colten Gutierrez, a 22-yard interception return for a score by Jonny Paramore and a 13-yard pass to Michael Cudd from quarterback Nash Knight.

It could have been even worse, too.

Paramore’s score was his second on defense in as many weeks and came just one play after one of two Raider fumbles inside of the Lake Dallas 5-yard line. Ryan coughed it up on the Lake Dallas 1-yard line in the first quarter as well, costing itself another touchdown that could have resulted in a five-score lead going into the locker room.

In total, the Raiders fumbled five times and lost two of them.

“Without [the fumbles] I would have felt really good about the first half,” Ryan head coach Joey Florence said. “We ran the ball when we needed to, we threw the ball well and the defense played well. Overall the first half — if you take away the fumbles — was a great half.”

Alexander was solid in perhaps his best game of the season. The senior running back carried for 95 yards on 15 carries and the early touchdown.

Cudd, meanwhile, finished the night with 100 yards receiving on seven catches and two touchdowns. He scored again on the first offensive play of the half for the Raiders, catching a 45-yard bomb from Knight to put his team up 31-0.

Defensively, Ryan continued its stellar play in holding a struggling Lake Dallas offense to just 19 total yards in the first half. Most of those yards came on a 21-yard completion from Dalyn Williams to Tre Dickerson late in the second quarter that resulted in the Falcons’ only first down of the first half.

The Raiders wouldn’t allow another first down until the fourth quarter, holding Lake Dallas to minus-3 yards in the third quarter before giving up most of the Falcons’ 122 total yards in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons scored their first points of the game after Daveon Parrish blocked a 44-yard field goal attempt by Ryan and Ferrando Joseph picked it up and ran it 66 yards for a score. They added another touchdown in the fourth quarter after Dalyn Williams hit receiver Tyler Vance on a 32-yard pass over the middle with 4:46 left.

“I thought we did some decent things tonight,” Lake Dallas coach Michael Young said. “They were going against one of the best front sevens I’ve ever seen. We’re excited about some of what we saw, but we definitely have some things to work on.”

Ryan, meanwhile, continued its solid play with its fifth straight win and perhaps its best all-around offensive performance of the season. Its defense, meanwhile, continues to harass opponents and render them nearly ineffective. In the first halves of their past two games, Ryan has given up a combined total of 19 yards and one first down in the first half.

“Anytime you can go on the road and win your first district ball game, it’s a good feeling,” Florence said. “With the defense playing the way it is, we’re going to have a chance in any ball game, and I thought the offense played really well tonight in the first half.”

Florence may seem cautiously optimistic, but his counterpart at Lake Dallas is less-so.

“Denton Ryan is going to beat a lot of people,” Young said. “Not just in district, either. They’re going to beat a lot of people in the playoffs.”

Lake Dallas DB duo slowing down offenses

11:45 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 22, 2010

By Marshall Moore / Staff Writer

CORINTH — For at least the past few seasons, Lake Dallas has been best known for explosive offenses and high-scoring games.

This year, though, its playoff prospects don’t hinge on a star quarterback or a standout receiver.

Lake Dallas High School defensive backs Daveon Parrish, left, and Ferrando Joseph lead a Lake Dallas secondary that has proven more than capable of putting the brakes on opposing passing games. The Falcons host Ryan today in their district opener.

More PhotosUniversity_of_Missouri

Instead, they may center on a couple of safeties.

Think of Daveon Parrish and Ferrando Jospeh as a shift in the culture of Lake Dallas football.

For the past two seasons, the Falcons have been grabbing headlines through the exploits of former quarterback and current University of Missouri freshman James Franklin.

Now, with an inexperienced offense still trying to find an identity as District 4-4A play opens today, Lake Dallas finds itself relying more on a shutdown defense than a potent offense.

That’s where Joseph and Parrish come in.

The duo of defensive backs are the stars of a solid secondary that has helped Lake Dallas (1-3) claw its way through a fairly brutal nondistrict schedule while staying competitive. It doesn’t get much easier, either. The Falcons host Ryan (4-0) in the district opener at 7 p.m. today.

The Falcons have lost three of their first four games, including a heartbreaking one-point loss to Richardson Pearce, and competitive defeats against both Red Oak and Sherman. That competitiveness is due in part to the play of Lake Dallas’ secondary, which is giving up just over 200 yards a game and allowing opponents to complete just 54.31 percent of their passes.

“We’re just working as a team,” said Parrish, who transferred from Denton after last season. “Making sure we communicate and get our signals across. Going full speed every play. That’s basically it. Going out there and finishing every play.”

Not impressed by the statistics? Consider whom the Falcons have played.

In Week 2, Sherman quarterback Thor Long threw for 562 yards and five touchdowns against Highland Park. The next week against Lake Dallas? He threw for 238 yards.

In the Falcons’ opener, Pearce quarterback Mac Morse threw for 211 yards —105 of which came on the game’s final two possessions — with one touchdown with two interceptions. Since then, Morse has thrown for 797 yards in two games with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Lake Dallas also gave up less than 200 yards passing against both Red Oak and Arlington Sam Houston, and has four interceptions on the year.

“We just play smart and practice hard,” Joseph said. “It’s a lot of the basic things that people don’t do. We stick to our zones, and there aren’t a lot of busts in our coverage. When there is, we still try to get to the ball and make things happen.”

Both Joseph and Parrish have been instrumental in Lake Dallas’ success in the secondary.

At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, Joseph is the more physical of the two and is known for his athleticism and ability to wrap up ball carriers.

“The main thing is he’s a great tackler,” Lake Dallas coach Michael Young said of Joseph. “You have to have that at safety. He cleans up a lot of the stuff if you have problems up front. We can move him around and put him in the box as an outside linebacker if we need to. He covers a lot of ground, he’s explosive, and whenever he’s playing, we’re a lot better on defense.”

Parrish, meanwhile, isn’t too bad at wrapping up, either. He currently leads Lake Dallas in tackling and, in the third quarter against Sherman, was responsible for causing an incompletion after jarring a receiver over the middle.

His main talent, however, is his nose for the ball.

“When I play, I look at it like this,” Parrish said. “I’m trying to get every tackle. I want every tackle to be my tackle. When something happens, I try to fly to the ball and make a play. It was something I’ve always been taught. If you can get to the ball on defense, good things happen.”

Good things, said Young, that Lake Dallas needs to be successful.

“We really count on [Parrish] to get interceptions,” he said. “We need him to get about six or eight this year, and we feel like he’ll get there.”

Parrish and Joseph have one interception each so far this season, and the Falcons are hoping that he’ll build on that number against Ryan.

The Raiders have one of the area’s top defensive units, which could spell trouble for the inexperienced Lake Dallas offense. To compensate, Young said the Falcons are going to need plenty of turnovers from Joseph, Parrish and the rest of the secondary.

“We don’t have to do anything extraordinarily great,” he said “We just have to play well and take some things away that they’re normally good at. We need to come up with some interceptions. When a team throws the ball, you’re going to have a chance to come away with a few picks, and we need to make sure we catch every one of those that hits our hands or bounces our way to give ourselves a chance.”

So far this year, Ryan has proven adept at throwing the football with first-year starter Nash Knight. Through four games, Knight has thrown for 769 yards with nine touchdown passes and just one interception.

Parrish, though, plans on exploiting Knight’s lack of experience as a starter in order to give his team a chance to keep pace.

“We’re going to try to take advantage of his inexperience,” Parrish said. “I played last year against Scotty [Young] and I did well, so I’m sure if I can execute and find his mistakes, we can make something out of it.”

Joseph, meanwhile, plans to use his physical nature to give Ryan a wake-up call.

“I think they’re going to get a little shock because we’re going to come out and hit them in the mouth,” he said. “We’re just going to play hard and hopefully our offense can get going and we’ll win the game.”

Football: Sherman pulls away to beat Falcons

01:48 AM CDT on Saturday, September 18, 2010

By Bill Spinks / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

SHERMAN — Lake Dallas’ defense was able to limit the damage done by the arm of Sherman quarterback Thor Long on Friday night. It was a different extremity of a different player that the Falcons couldn’t account for.

Eric Hosek kicked five field goals, including a school-record-tying 50-yarder midway through the third quarter, as the Bearcats pulled away in the second half for a 36-10 win over the Falcons at Bearcat Stadium in the final nondistrict game for both teams.

Sherman avenged a 43-27 loss to the Falcons in last year’s season opener. It was also a game of redemption for Hosek, who had missed a 24-yard field goal in the final seconds last week that would’ve beaten Highland Park. Hosek finished with field goals of 34, 44, 43, 50 and 24 yards and also booted seven of eight kickoffs into the end zone.

In the second half, after Lake Dallas (1-3) trimmed the deficit to 16-10 on Brandon Womack’s 36-yard field goal, Sherman began to pull away.

Hosek, who had a 45-yarder nullified by a procedure penalty, line-drived one five yards farther back to make it 19-10. Then after a Falcon punt of only 15 yards, Sherman’s Long threw his second scoring touchdown of the night from 35 yards out to Nathan James, and the Bearcats were off and running.

Sherman added a 24-yard Hosek field goal and a 6-yard run by reserve running back Lino Castaneda with seconds left to round out the scoring.

James finished with seven catches for 105 receiving yards, and Zac Whitfield rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries for Sherman.

Lake Dallas took a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter on Dalyn Williams’ 6-yard pass to Dontonio Jordan, capping an 80-yard, 11-play drive. The Falcons, though, suffered fumbles on each of their next two possessions, resulting in Hosek field goals of 44 and 43 yards, respectively, as Sherman took a 16-7 lead into halftime.

Long, who passed for a school-record 562 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s one-point loss to Highland Park, turned in a more modest effort against Lake Dallas with 238 passing yards and two touchdowns on 17-of-28 attempts on the night.

Sherman (3-1) took the initial lead by opening the game with a 15-play possession. A Whitfield touchdown run of 59 yards was negated by a holding penalty, but Hosek put the Bearcats on the board with his first kick of the night, a 34-yarder with 5:14 to go in the first.

The Falcons answered as Williams led a drive with 38 rushing yards and 21 more through the air, and capped it with Williams’ toss to Jordan for a 7-3 lead with 32.6 seconds remaining in the first.

But the Bearcats struck quickly. On Sherman’s second play following the ensuing kickoff, Long hit receiver Tory Minor deep for a touchdown play covering 62 yards, and Sherman regained a 10-7 lead on the final play of the first quarter.

The Falcons defense kept Sherman out of the end zone in of the second quarter, but Hosek had plenty enough leg to help the Bearcats widen their advantage.

Williams finished with 116 passing yards and a touchdown, completing 14 of 25 passes for the Falcons. Sherman’s defense, following the first Lake Dallas score, kept the Falcons out of the end zone the rest of the way and held them to 219 total offensive yards.Anchor

Football: Falcons roll past Texans

02:29 AM CDT on Saturday, September 11, 2010

By Matthew Postins / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

ARLINGTON — Lake Dallas claimed its first victory of the season in a game that turned into an offensive explosion, as the Falcons defeated Arlington Sam Houston, 45-28, at Wilemon Field on Friday night.

The Falcons (1-2) scored on their first five drives of the game to help build a 38-21 halftime lead that was never threatened, despite the best efforts of Texans quarterback Jamal Turner, who produced nearly 500 yards of total offense.

Lake Dallas quarterback Dalyn Williams wasn’t exactly a slouch. The junior quarterback, making his third varsity start, threw for 238 yards and rushed for another 111, throwing three touchdown passes and scoring two on the ground, all in the first half. He opened the Falcons’ first drive on a high note, throwing a 16-yard pass to Dontonio Jordan and then hitting Michal Jurcak downfield for a 52-yard touchdown pass to answer Sam Houston’s game-opening score and tie the game at 7.

The Lake Dallas defense did just enough on the ensuing drive to force the Texans (1-2) to punt, giving Williams and the Falcons the opening they needed to take the lead. The Falcons needed just four plays to score on the next drive, as Williams connected with Jordan for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 4:07 left in the first quarter.

Jordan was the biggest beneficiary of Williams’ 13-of-16 passing night, catching six passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. The second TD came on the opening play of the second quarter, as Williams and Jordan connected for a 52-yard pass to give Lake Dallas a 28-14 lead.

Jurcak had four catches for 75 yards.

At times the offense came in large chunks, partly due to the talents of Williams, Turner and Jordan, and partly due to poor tackling by both defenses. On several occasions offensive players busted through arm tackles and changed directions several times to produce big gains.

No one did more of that than Turner. The rangy senior was definitely the straw that stirred the drink for the Texans, as the Falcons had difficulty stopping his keepers out of the spread formation, and at times they had trouble keeping up with his receivers.

Turner finished with a whopping 285 yards rushing on 31 carries, including four touchdown runs, plus another 204 yards passing. His line of 19-of-41 passing was misleading, as Texans receivers dropped at least a dozen catchable passes.

Those drops stymied the Texans’ offense in the second half, as did a Falcon defense that did just enough to fluster Thomas in the pocket, despite its fatigue. The Texans ran 41 offensive plays in the second half, to Lake Dallas’ 18.

After Thomas’ fourth touchdown run made it 45-28, the Texans went out on downs on two straight drives. On their next drive, they reached the 1, but Turner fumbled the ball backwards on his way over the goal line and Lake Dallas recovered, effectively putting the game away.

The Falcons were not completely reliant on Williams to produce their offense. Along with Jordan, who also gained 40 yards rushing, Tyler Waller pitched in 129 yards rushing on 12 attempts and the Falcons’ final touchdown, a 6-yarder in the third quarter.

The Falcons finish up the nondistrict portion of their schedule next Friday with a trip to Sherman.

Football: Lake Dallas sputters in loss to Red Oak

02:06 AM CDT on Saturday, September 4, 2010

By Matthew Postins / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

CORINTH — It was clear that Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young found the small yardage totals less disturbing than the Falcons’ inability to cash in on Red Oak’s mistakes.

The Falcons forced four turnovers Friday night, but only converted them into 10 points, and that shortcoming led to their second straight loss to start the 2010 season, 24-10, against the Hawks.

Lake Dallas (0-2), which shared a district title last year in 5-4A, enters its game next Friday against Arlington Sam Houston still looking for win No. 1.

“I’m not disappointed,” Young said. “We knew [Red Oak] had a great defense coming in. But we have to score points when we’re given a short field like we were given tonight.”

Lake Dallas gained just 110 total yards, but the defense handed the offense plenty of chances to take control of the game, or even win, despite the small overall yardage. A fumble recovery by Kyle Brewer put the Falcons at the Hawk 32 in the first quarter. The drive ended with a blocked field goal.

A Ferrando Joseph interception in the second quarter put the Falcons at the Hawk 17, and the Falcons turned it into their only touchdown of the game. Lake Dallas quarterback Dalyn Williams threw a fade to Dontonio Jordan in the front corner of the end zone to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.

In the third quarter, an interception by Travis Simon put the Falcons at their own 35. The next play, a pass interference call against Red Oak, put Lake Dallas at midfield. On the next play, Williams completed a pass to Michal Jurcak, who attempted a hook-and-ladder pitch to a fellow teammate. The pitch fell short, Red Oak’s Keon Johnson scooped up the loose ball and ran 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Hawks (2-0) a 17-3 lead.

That was the turning point of the game. A fourth turnover put Lake Dallas at Red Oak’s 37, but all that yielded was a 21-yard field goal by Brandon Womack to cut the Red Oak lead to 17-10. The Hawks scored another touchdown on the following drive to seal the contest.

“Our offense is young and we think they’ll get there,” Young said. “Our defense is where our experience is right now, and I think they played well overall.”

The Lake Dallas defense did allow 326 yards, but much of that came in the second half after Red Oak wore it down and received a spark from backup quarterback Claud Person, who directed most of the second-half offense.

Mandel Dixon’s 9-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter underscored that fact, as several Falcons met him at the 5-yard line. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound back kept his legs moving, powered through the crowd and over the goal line.

Ishmael Harrison’s 35-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter met little resistance, as he found a big hole on the right side and used his speed to quickly get into the open field and around the corner of the defense.

By then, however, the defense proved it had more than enough playmaking ability to set up its offense with positive field position.

Williams, in his second varsity start, threw for 69 yards on 10-of-24 passing, but rushed for only 36 yards a week after rushing for 145 yards and two scores against Richardson Pearce.

Jordan was Williams’ favorite target, as he caught five passes for 49 yards, including the only touchdown of the night for the Falcons.

Football: Late field goal lifts Pearce over Falcons

01:04 AM CDT on Saturday, August 28, 2010

By Greg Tepper / The Dallas Morning News

CORINTH — Richardson Pearce kicker Evan Harmon made a 31-yard field goal as time expired to push Pearce past Lake Dallas 24-23 on Friday night.

Trailing 23-21 without a timeout remaining, Pearce running back Jonathan Cosby was tackled inbounds on a third-down swing pass with 20 seconds remaining. The Pearce field goal unit scurried onto the field, and Harmon calmly knocked through the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.

The winning score capped a furious comeback by Pearce, which fell behind 23-14 with 4:25 remaining on Lake Dallas quarterback Dalyn Williams’ second touchdown run of the night.

On the next offensive play for Pearce, quarterback Mac Morse threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jared Floyd to pull Pearce to within two points.

After stopping Lake Dallas on its ensuing possession, Morse led Pearce down the field from its own 23, highlighted by a 53-yard pass to Blake Durant to move deep into Lake Dallas territory.

The first three quarters were dominated by the defenses. Lake Dallas defensive backs Travis Simon and Daveon Parrish each intercepted Morse with Pearce within five yards of the end zone, and Pearce’s Bryce Henderson intercepted Lake Dallas’ Williams to set up Pearce’s second touchdown of the game.

Running back Corey Coleman accumulated 147 total yards and a score for Pearce. Williams led Lake Dallas with 156 yards rushing and another 60 yards through the air.
